Description

South Cheshire College is now complete, ready to open its doors to students starting in September 2010. Work began in the summer of 2008, the new campus development project will lead education in Crewe and Nantwich into a new era. The project centres on the creation of a carbon-neutral building which is environmentally sustainable.

SES worked closely with our client Scorpion Site Services to set out and align the complicated steel structure, as the new campus building incorporated an elaborate ten grid system layout. At first SES traversed the primary survey control and established secondary control relative to each grid system, this enabled our surveyors to execute straightforward co-ordinate transformations between each of the zones. As well as setting out the base plate positions and verticality of each column, SES provided as-built drawings of each zone for our client to hand over to the main contractor.

Description

Designed by Assael architects for George Wimpey City the 25-storey residential tower providing 260 apartments rises dramatically between the historic Great Northern Warehouse and Manchester G-Mex. Scheldebouw were appointed the cladding package and selected SES as their Survey & Setting Out contractor. Ground floor to level 10 we provided an offset near to the slab edge which enabled their fixers to install brackets, however from level 10 to 25 the building took on a slope in the profile. SES had to adapt the setting out criteria to set out brackets directly on to the raking steelwork, all of which support panels made of glass, metal, and grey tiles.

SES understands the need for a high degree of accuracy when setting out intricate cladding.

Description

The Media City UK project at Salford Quays in Greater Manchester is well on the way, this is a city designed specifically around the media industry.

SES completed the Surveying & Setting Out package for the cladding on the B4 building which was supplied and installed by GIG Facades. The cladding system is a combination of stick work and unitised elements. The building has a 2 part splayed grid system from levels 00 to 05 which then steps in to form a rectangular structure between floors 05 to 13. Cladding/Curtain Walling systems today require a high degree of accuracy, by adopting stringent surveying procedures and thorough checks SES ensures the desired setting out accuracy is achieved. SES plumbed primary survey control on to each floor using plumbing holes, from this framework we then set out the gridlines and offsets for the cladding brackets. In addition to setting out, SES transferred a master datum to each floor, provided full as-built drawings of the structure and installed panels as part of a hand over and carried out fortnightly monitoring on the post tensioned slabs.

Description

The exciting Gateway Plaza is a mixed use scheme strategically located in the centre of Barnsley. Our client R&S Driwall contracted SES to set out the office development and then once complete, move on to the residential block.

Office: Our task was to set out the dry wall partitions and wall linings throughout the floor plates, this entailed reading the architects drawings and calculating co-ordinates for each wall type. The detail involved enclosed columns, lift lobbies, stair cores and internal office space.

Residential: The residential block is made up of 188 luxury apartments over 15 floors. Having a vast amount of stud wall to erect, it was beneficial for R&S to have SES on site as we were able to set out the flat locations prior to the fixers starting a section.

The surveying and setting out for the project came in on budget as SES offers a fixed cost solution for their clients.

Description

Latham's Yard is located in Upper Clapton adjacent to the River Lea, a development by Taylor Wimpey Homes of over 600 units is rapidly transforming the areas previously known as Middlesex and Leeside Wharves. In the 18th and 19th centuries the site was home to brickworks established for the development of housing on the outskirts of London in the post medieval centuries, in 1912 the area was industrialised by the timber merchants James Latham.

Taylor Wimpey has delivered a contemporary development of apartments in four phases, Almond Court, Alder Court, Blackberry Court and Elder Court. SES have been employed to provide primary survey control to the project and to undertake as-built surveys of the residential buildings as construction proceeds.

Description

The Visual Arts facility is intended to be a centre of excellence and innovation for culture and learning. The town's new public building will include spaces for art, education, community spaces and leisure activities.

Mace were appointed project manager mid flight through the construction of the project, designed by architect Rafael Vinoly, and required a full as built survey of the structure, to undertake a survey of a building with such a complex geometry SES applied 3D laser scanning technology.

We decided to use 3D laser scanning for approximately 70% of the survey due to the various radial grid systems. Capturing a staggering 280million points the scan enabled us to

  • Provide a 3D AutoCAD model
  • Generate sections through complicated structural profiles with ease
  • Create floor and reflected ceiling plans
  • Survey high risk area's such as the roof without the need for high level access
  • Minimise time spent in the field
  • Eliminate the need for site re-visits

Description

SES surveys Qatar University for Avanti Systems. The project entailed installing a bespoke pre fabricated internal partitioning system with Tadmur Contracting which required an accurate dimensional survey and setting out to match. In little over a week SES mobilized and was on site setting out gridlines, datum's and capturing important as-built information to enable their designers to produce fabrication drawings.

 

The Shard

Description

The structure which is now visible above ground will be the tallest building in Western Europe at 306m and will rise above London Bridge Station. The Shard with its mix of offices, residences, hotel, restaurants and viewing platforms will herald a new era in high rise development for London and will become emblematic when all eyes look towards the city in 2012.

SES have been awarded the contract for providing the survey control for the project. With a structure of this height with the anticipated building movements and settlement SES have been required to design a system for transferring the gridline control and level datum's to each level of construction that will ensure a dependable platform is established to allow the trade contractors to set out their works with confidence.

 

The Pinnacle

Description

Consisting of 60 floors, 80,420 sq m of floor space and reaching 288 metres, the construction of the Pinnacle in the City of London is now well underway with the demolition of the existing basement slabs. The first three floors of the building will be publicly accessible and a restaurant on the 43rd floor would be London's highest public vantage point. Offices will be spread across 52 floors with levels 3 to 9 encompassing financial trading floors.

Constructing one of Europe's tallest buildings is a challenge on its own but surrounded by existing buildings, Victorian sewers and modern communication tunnels makes for an interesting build process. SES has been appointed by Brookfield to establish a monitoring regime to identify the smallest movements of the existing geotechnical and structural surrounds.

SES have positioned in excess of 60 tiltmeters in arrays around the existing retaining walls to monitor for movement, by adopting tiltmeters SES is able to monitor the walls continuously even whilst construction is taking place directly above. Our dedicated monitoring department has set up a client specific website which shows the REAL-TIME monitoring results, this means that the structural engineers and project managers can view/download the data 24/7.

Description

SES is proud to be the contractor managing the dimensional control on the Royal Shakespeare Company's Theatre as it transforms into a state of the art facility. The Grade II listed building will undergo radical changes in the form of a new 1,000 seat auditorium, a new tower which will enable visitors to view the town and many more.

As construction surveyors, SES had to monitor the retained art deco facade whilst the new beams and floors were being installed, this was done by using 19 tiltmeters and reflective targets. The tiltmeters transmitted data wirelessly to a centralised data logger which in turn sent the data to SES HQ via sim card. This data was then processed and up-loaded onto a specific website for the client, designers and project team to view and download.

Description

Currently Sky Sports Broadcasting is spread over several parts of the Osterley site, Bovis Lend Lease and an Arup consortium will be bringing the operations under one roof by 2010 with a new 25,000m² "green" building. The new facility will make use of natural ventilation as the plan is to go carbon neutral and be Europe's most sustainable broadcasting facility. Our role on the project is to establish the Primary Survey Control and maintain overall dimensional control on each floor of construction. As well as working for the main contractor, SES also provides surveying services to various trade contractors on site, providing accurate grid lines and level datums for lift installation and preinstallation surveys for the architectural metalwork contractor.

Description

As a proud bronze sponsor of the Serpentine Gallery located in Kensington Gardens each year SES contribute our setting out services. Each year the Serpentine arts commission builds a new pavilion design, this year the structure, designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, resembles a reflective cloud or a floating pool of water, sitting atop a series of delicate columns. The metal roof structure varies in height, wrapping itself around the trees in the park, reaching up towards the sky and sweeping down almost to the ground in various places. Open and ephemeral in structure, its reflective materials make it sit seamlessly within the natural environment, reflecting both the park and sky around it.

Description

This iconic 6 storey horseshoe shaped building located in Hackney was delivered by Mace Plus. The Academy specialises in maths and music and offers places for 1150 students, with a 450 seat performance theatre and dance studios as well as an outdoor amphitheatre, built above the ground floor car park.

Our role as Project Surveyors was to maintain overall dimensional control over this unique shaped building. SES established the initial Primary Survey Control and subsequently transferred the control to each floor for the following trade contractors. With all trade contractors using the same set of gridlines and datum this minimised the risk of installation errors on this geometrically complex structure.

Telehouse Europe is the longest established provider of reliable and secure data centre facilities. With their strong and improving financial position, this enables them to remain committed to the on-going major infrastructure investments in our existing facilities. Mace is currently involved in providing Telehouse Europe with a nine-storey, 19,000 m² facility which will mitigate its carbon footprint by exporting waste heat for use in nearby homes and businesses. As project surveyors SES has established all the Primary Survey Control Stations and transfered the gridlines and datums to each floor. This will enable all trade contractors to use the same setting out criteria which will reduce the risk of interface problems.

Description

One of the largest PFI projects undertaken within the National Health Service, the £340m project due for completion in 2010, comprises three new buildings:

  • a 95,383 m² Acute Hospital, which will include 612 in-patient beds and 22 operating theatres and a multi-storey car park with 908 spaces;
  • a 9,043 m² Mental Health Unit which will accommodate 102 beds; and
  • a 9,265 m² Integrated Care Centre which will provide 34 beds.

SES oversees the primary survey control, secondary control setting out and all trade contractor verification surveys. As-built surveys are continuously being supplied to the Project Managers as they monitor the construction progress.

Britain's biggest hospital redevelopment and the world's largest health care Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project is a state-of-the-art medical and teaching facility. With 905-beds and 22 operating theatres, Royal London Hospital is a new district general hospital. This major refurbishment will totally transform the dated appearance to a much more attractive educational environment. The plans include the formation of a new internal courtyard, the cladding of the exterior of the building and the surfacing and lighting of the western car park. Working with old record drawings is never reliable so to assist with design work SES undertook a building survey.

Description

The area of Ravenscraig in Scotland's Central Belt will become home to over 10,000 people, and is expected to create 12,000 jobs and attract in excess of £1.2 billion of private sector investment over the next 15 to 20 years. SES is involved with the setting out of the approx 2500 ton steel Sports Facility. The building boasts an indoor football pitch, sports hall, dance studios and much more. Description

Edinburgh's former Royal Infirmary has undergone re-development and is one of Scotland's largest regeneration schemes. The 19 acre development will provide more than 900 apartments and 40,000m² of office, retail and leisure space. The site's Victorian listed buildings will be restored and complemented by a series of new steel and glass structures. It's with the new modern glass buildings that SES has been involved, setting out the cladding systems for 7 buildings in the complex. Whether it's unitized panels or stick system SES has provided an accurate and reliable service. Projects like these are where SES have developed sustained working relationships with our clients.
